20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2025 Mark Svozil (center front), vice president and general manager, CLS, speaks to the attendees at the CLS Advanced Leadership Training, where the group learned about furthering their leadership journeys while working to uplift their teams. At the Larry Evans Arborist & Fitness (LEAF) Campus' Pole Reinforcement Training, Davey Tree Surgery Company employees revisited procedures and safe practices for Pole Reinforcement work within the company's PG&E territory. About a month later at the Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) Advanced Leadership Training at the Science, Employee Education & Development (SEED) Campus, Commercial Landscape Services leaders gained insights into how to better connect with their teams so they can communicate more effectively and motivate them toward success, according to attendee Max Hostetler." The CLS Advanced Leadership Training brought crew leaders, production managers, account managers and branch managers together for a weeklong educational gathering designed to cultivate the future leaders of CLS. In the classroom, they participated in presentations on topics including best-in-class service practices, investing in personal growth and proven leadership strategies. Outside the classroom, the group had the opportunity to build relationships and connect on a personal level through shared meals and a tour of the Davey Nursery in Wooster, Ohio. "These shared experiences were invaluable in fostering genuine friendships and strong professional relationships with fellow future leaders of CLS," Hostetler, account manager, Minneapolis CLS, said. "Equally important was the opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices for leading our respective teams. By openly sharing our insights, TRAINING AT INNOVATIVE CAMPUSES HELPS EMPLOYEES we aimed to inspire one another and contribute to the success of teams across all CLS branches." David Vasquez said the Pole Reinforcement Training gave him and other attendees from the Surgery Company's Pole Division the tools they need to work safely and efficiently. Much of the training consisted of hands-on learning, where the group learned about work do's and don'ts and how to maintain safety on the job even during unexpected situations. Later during presentations, the group learned about the company's Industrial Athlete Program, which works to address the work demands and ergonomics of Pole Reinforcement work, among other objectives. PG&E requested and chose the Surgery Company to help expand the PG&E utility system hardening program, and PG&E leadership were invited to view the training, which was led by members of the Surgery Company Pole Division Management and the Livermore office team. "Through this training, Davey gave us the opportunity to grow in our careers, and the newcomers who attended were able to see what they may encounter in the field in a safe environment that promotes learning," Vasquez, pole restoration foreman, PG&E Pole Reinforcement, said. "The job we do requires a lot – and we were able to further learn what this field requires, how we can use the tools we are given to serve our clients better, how we can create a safe environment and how we can exceed expectations."
