14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2025 PRESENTATION REINFORCES VALUE OF SAFETY AT DAVEY Matt Krause brought his safety expertise to the Utility Arborist Association's California Safety Summit with client PG&E, as he helped educate industry professionals on how new and existing employees can reduce and eliminate the potential for serious and fatal injuries on the job. In his presentation, Krause explained the importance of the Energy Wheel, a tool used to promote greater energy-based hazard recognition, in arboricultural industry. Among various other topics, he also discussed serious and fatal injury identification, risk management, and risk tolerance. "Our presentation showcases our mission of exceeding client expectations by our consistent performance as a leading quality contractor within the PG&E vegetation management program," Krause said. "Davey's leadership within PG&E has given us the opportunity to promote safety within our workplace, utilizing the science, knowledge, and experience we have within the industry." SAFETY HAZARDOUS TREE CAUGHT JUST IN TIME ON PLAYGROUND Keeping people safe from unknown hazards is something Luke Brunner, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist ® , takes a lot of pride in, and he was able to do just that recently for schoolchildren in Michigan. The deputy superintendent of the district had reached out to Davey to inspect trees throughout her schools. Once Brunner got on site with Chad Allen, district manager, North Detroit office, Residential/Commercial services (R/C), the pair noticed a dead spar that had gone unnoticed by the district leaning heavily toward nearby playground equipment with rotted, nearly nonexistent flare roots and, as they discovered, serious internal decay. "The removal required careful planning and rigging because of its location near play structures, but the crew handled it smoothly and safely," Brunner, business developer, R/C, said. "We felt a huge sense of relief once it was down, knowing the students could return to a safe playground. The district was very appreciative, and this removal turned into a great example of Davey's commitment to safety, expertise, and protecting the communities we serve." In the risk management and risk tolerance portion of his presentation, Matt Krause defines the varying levels of risk that can occur on the job. North Detroit office crews remove a large dead spar that sat in the center of a school playground.
