16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2025 Vacant Lot Farm Club, a nonprofit turning urban lots into community spaces, reached out to the Calgary Residential office, Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada, Limited, for mulch for its endeavor. The organization's current project is set to feature a compost patch and no-dig garden, along with other environmentally friendly spots, in Calgary. Now, Davey has driven over 30 tons of woodchips from NEW SUSTAINABLE SPACE IN TOWN, ONE WOOD CHIP AT A TIME Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) employees in Ohio are living out Davey values of leadership, stewardship and perseverance by building playsets and playhouses for children fighting cancer. In partnership with Roc Solid, a pediatric cancer foundation that supports playset building programs and other initiatives to support families affected by cancer, Columbus and Cleveland office crews built four play structures this summer. "This is exactly who Davey is," Mark Svozil, vice president and general manager, CLS, said. "We are about our communities. We are about our families. We are about teaching our teams that giving back carries such a deep sense of pride." OHIO CLS CREWS BUILD FUN FOR CHILDREN FIGHTING CANCER This is the first year Davey is building with Roc Solid, but the company has sponsored events with Roc Solid for the last two years. Davey's goal is to build six to eight playsets or playhouses a year moving forward and expand its efforts into other markets. "Davey has strong family values, which extend beyond the workplace," Tony Clum, operations manager, CLS, said. "For myself and our teams to give back to families who are going through the unthinkable is a tremendous feeling. The impact that you can have on those for simply giving your time is so great that I hope to continue this with our teams for many years to come." STEWARDSHIP worksites for the project. Jason Rehill, district manager, Calgary office, said his office takes part in similar efforts for other organizations, like local churches, in the area. "We're recycling rather than putting anything into landfill, and what we're doing is promoting cohesiveness and helping out the community" Rehill said. "Community cohesiveness is important, especially during the summer here." A Calgary crew from Davey Canada brings woodchips to a nonprofit working to create sustainable community spaces in urban areas. Mirha, a young girl in remission, plays in a playhouse built for her by employees of the Davey Columbus territory. In total, local CLS crews built two playhouses in Columbus, Ohio, this summer, along with a structure in Ravenna, Ohio, and Uniontown, Ohio.
