Setting expectations based on objectives and goals the
leadership team establishes for the service line and then
going above and beyond what is expected is important.
Utility services crews do this well, Page said, by
continuously revisiting their performance improvement
plan, which gives crews steps to making key advancements
in various areas.
To accomplish their operational and safety goals in the field,
McCloskey said he creates a positive work environment
and remains diligent on training follow-ups. While overseeing
130 people, McCloskey ensures his team progresses in
Davey's Career Development Program training books. This
is a key factor to both his team's success and their safety.
McCloskey also stressed that team leaders should create
an open and honest safety culture. He said he strives to be
present on work sites and maintain a strong relationship
with each crew member so they know they can talk to him
anytime questions or concerns come up. "Nobody wants
to deliver the message of an injury to an employee to their
loved one," McCloskey said. "We're all family out there,
SAFETY, OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE GO HAND-IN-HAND
For Jason McCloskey, safety is a non-negotiable.
And when safety performance improves, operational
performance improves with it, says Johnny Page, operations
vice president, Gulf Region, Eastern Utility services. Both
benefit all Davey teams within our employee-owned company.
"Safety is part of the job – it needs to happen," McCloskey,
account manager, Gulf Region, Eastern Utility services,
said. "We've found ways to build that into what we do and
stay productive."
For utility services crew members, particularly for those
McCloskey works with in the Gulf Region, prioritizing
safety along with making sound financial decisions remains
a top focus.
This starts with employees, Page said.
"It is their work site; they own it," Page said. "They own
the safety performance. They own the operational
performance. They are the key component that helps
determine whether we win or lose. They're the face
of Davey."
