26 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2025 Cathy Crocker retired May 10 following 43 years of service. She started her career as a clerk in the corporate office. She then became an assistant buyer with the purchasing department. She was later promoted to buyer and then to supervisor. In 2017, she was promoted to purchasing manager of commodities and remained in that role until retirement. William Evans retired May 10 after 28 years of service. He began his Davey career as a climber with the Davey Tree Surgery Company, PG&E account. Evans later advanced to a foreman role while working with Surgery Company's Hawaiian Electric account. In 2000, he returned to the PG&E account as a foreman. He then became a general foreman, and in 2011, was promoted to supervisor, a role he held until his retirement. James Gabbard retired May 10 after 34 years of service. He began his career with Davey in 1990 as a groundsperson in Michigan in Commercial Landscape Services. In 1996, he was promoted to landscape foreman and became a landscape coordinator in 1999. He served in various roles at the production level before being promoted to account manager, then assistant branch manager. In 2013, he was named branch manager, a role he held until his retirement. Craig Mays retired May 3 after 37 years of service. He began his Davey career as a spray technician in the Charleston, West Virginia, Residential/ Commercial office. In 1988, he was promoted to S&S technician. Mays became a landscape foreman in 1991, and in 2004, he returned to his role as a S&S technician. He stayed in that position until retirement. John Nowak retired October 5 following 33 years of service. He began his career at Davey as an equipment administrative technician in the equipment department at the corporate office. He was later promoted to fleet maintenance administrator within fleet management and ultimately became a fleet specialist, a role he held until his retirement. Luther Sanderson Davey's longest- tenured active employee, retired May 31, 2025, after 60 years of service. Sanderson was supervisor, Upper Atlantic operations, Eastern Utility services. Sanderson started at Davey in 1965 as a groundsman on the Carolina Power & Light account. A few months later, he was promoted to trimmer, and soon after, he became a foreman. His next promotion came in 1991, as he moved up to general foreman, and over the next two decades, he would become a supervisor on the CP&L account then a supervisor on the Jones-Onslow account. Sanderson was an employee ownership advocate, and in 2016, he was spotlighted for his dedication to Davey at the annual Shareholders' Meeting. In 2015, in honor of his 50 years of service, The Bulletin highlighted Sanderson's tenure. Sanderson said he had wanted to join Davey since he was 16 after seeing the work done by Davey crew members at a local service station. Dubbed, "the tree man," by his peers, Sanderson had said he couldn't imagine working anywhere else. "I love where I'm at; I love what I do," he said.
