21 July/August 2025 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Among our most important objectives is to deepen our capacity to learn, anticipate, respond, and monitor the conditions that can contribute to the most serious outcomes in our work. The insights from our Learn Safe Daily Reports highlights key trends around how serious incidents can unfold and offers strategies to build resilience to maintain positive control of our work environments. In other words, it reveals the common denominators of safe work. This becomes a tool for raising awareness and promoting continuous improvement to help things go right more often across our organization. A special thanks to those who showed courage in bringing forward and sharing close calls, dedicating time to complete the close call reports, and contributing their experiences to benefit the entire Davey Company. Your participation in our safety culture helps make everyone safer by sharing your experiences. COMMON DENOMINATORS OF SAFE WORK The Learn Safe Daily reports highlight examples of positive actions and effective safeguards that contributed to preventing more serious outcomes. Here are some things that we do well: • Proactive Communication: Many reports praise our crew members for communicating effectively, especially when encountering unexpected hazards or recognizing potential dangers. Examples include calling an all-stop to discuss concerns, clarifying work plans before making cuts, informing other crew members of hazards such as a downed power line or a dog on the loose, and contacting man- agement to report issues or adjust plans. • Thorough Inspections: Several recent reports commend our employees for conducting thorough inspections of trees, equipment, and the work area. This includes identifying hazards such as decay, hollows, unstable bases, damaged equipment, and potential struck-by hazards outside the immediate drop zone. • Following Safe Practices: The reports also highlight instances where crews followed established safety procedures, contributing to less severe outcomes. Examples include using cones to mark the drop zone, wearing appropriate PPE, using a push stick when feeding material into the chipper, and utilizing proper rigging techniques. • Recognizing and Controlling Critical Hazards: The reports place a strong emphasis on identifying and mitigating potential hazards. This includes recognizing error-likely situations like right when a job starts and right before it ends, being aware of the risks associated with working near traffic, understanding the behavior of storm-damaged and downed trees, and anticipating potential pinch points. • "Climate" of Safety: The reports also describe a work environment where crews feel comfortable reporting close calls and suggesting improvements, which indicates a positive safety climate. This is evident in the comments praising crews for sharing their experiences and encouraging open communication about safety concerns. Adopting a team achievement mindset is the fuel for strengthening our collective safety performance. These are only a few of the practices we consistently get right every day. By proactively communicating with each other, inspecting job-site conditions and equipment thoroughly, following safe practices, recognizing and controlling potential hazards, and maintaining a climate of safety, our crews are taking the steps necessary to build capacity to better absorb errors and surprises – and to turn negative outcomes into positive ones.
