21 January/February 2025 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN "The trainings allow for you to meet new people and see new perspectives," Christiane Cerillo, foreman, Hamden office, said. "It's like being in an accelerated learning environment where we get to learn new skills and techniques to use in our everyday work." Two separate arborist skills rigging modules took place in Attica, Michigan, where attendees learned safe and effective rigging techniques to control tree limbs and wood. Two Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) training courses took place, one in Pennsylvania and one in Virginia, with attendees from the Mid-Atlantic region's R/C services offices, alongside service line leaders and support staff. Participants explored strategies for promoting positive outcomes by creating and maintaining trust, and by embracing continuous learning. "We talked a lot about celebrating what we learn each day instead of only talking about negative occurrences," Stephen Howard, sales arborist, North Virginia East office, said. "Nobody is perfect, so we must create a system where we can fail safely." Planting the SEED training attendees from Eastern Utility services and the health and safety department learned about the craft of leadership, how to be a courageous leader, and how to establish a pipeline for empowering future Davey leaders. "The training helped us understand the different roles of leadership and how to break out of your comfort zone," Ronnie Adams, supervisor, rail division, Eastern Utility services, said. "We got to try a lot of new techniques on leadership, learn how to better interact and speak with each other." Montrell Jordan, trimmer, Naperville office, left, is with Matthew Sharrow, arborist skills trainer, health and safety department, right, discussing the assessment of a felling tree stump with decay at the arborist skills chainsaw module in Naperville, Illinois. Planting the SEED training attendee members work together to lower a pole to the ground while it remains level, to build teamwork and communication skills. Factors and Forces attendees in Burlington, Ontario, learn how to develop a safe work plan to determine the five factors and five forces before beginning work on trees.
