16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2025 PERSEVERANCE Noe Fuentes, UVM technician, SDG&E account, Davey Resource Group, recently finished helping San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) assess and address trees and branches with Major Woody Stem (MWS) status near high voltage power lines on Palomar Mountain in San Diego County, California. SDG&E's Wildfire Mitigation Program includes the removal or pruning of MWS trees, meaning those trees have a trunk or branch that falls within the 4 foot minimum clearance of the lines. Fuentes said some of the trees were over 80 feet tall. The trees were on a variety of private, state, and federally owned lands, each requiring their own unique mitigation process. "Davey has taught me to always do a great job," Fuentes said. "I felt a deep sense of pride when we completed this project because I grew up in the San Diego area, so I felt like I was contributing to the safety of the community that raised me." MWS ELIMINATED FROM PALOMAR MOUNTAIN SERVICE AREA BEEHIVE DISCOVERY CALLS FOR AN 'ALL-STOP' When Greg Mazzanti, trimmer, North Pittsburgh office, Residential/Commercial services, was beginning to remove a dead oak tree on a client's property in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, he noticed honeybees flying out of the tree's cavity. He called for an immediate "all-stop" on work to ensure the safety of his crew and the bees. Mazzanti called the office's sales arborist, Eric Rosko, to determine how to proceed. Rosko enlisted the help of a beekeeper and Davey client to assist the crew in safely removing the estimated 1,000 bees and their honeycomb from the tree. "It's been instilled in us by those with long-time experience at Davey to always take precaution and make safety our first priority," Mazzanti said. "I knew that honeybees were federally protected, so I wanted to ensure the safety of the bees and my fellow crew members" Davey client and beekeeper, Richard Packer, is pictured gently removing the bees' honeycombs, to put them in a "mobile hive" for eventual relocation. SAFETY An oak tree with MWS status is pictured next to a transformer before the tree was removed.
