13 January/February 2025 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Jamie Morgan, associate consultant, Environmental Consulting services, Davey Resource Group, volunteered to speak to her four-year-old son Clay's preschool class about trees and her role at Davey. Morgan first spoke about the value of "big trees" and what makes them special with the class, before giving a demonstration on how to measure a tree's diameter at breast height. Morgan also brought in examples of different leaf types (simple, divided, compound), and showed the children what tree tubes look like and explained how they are used to protect young trees from deer damage. She addi- tionally spoke about the endangered native New Jersey pawpaw tree and the pawpaw fruit it produces. "I think it's important to instill a love and appreciation for trees in kids at an early age," Morgan said. "I'm also happy to be able to share career opportunities in our industry with them, and how rewarding it can be to work outside with trees and plants." STEWARDSHIP Nicholas St. Sauveur is pictured teaching about plant healthcare techniques with Trees Knoxville through their volunteer program, which is designed to connect the community with professional arborists to teach them about tree-related topics. He said that one of the biggest benefits of being a volunteer arborist is networking, as he has gained both future employees and clients from teaching sessions. gives talks about diagnosing trees and basic plant healthcare principles once during the fall and the spring respectively. He has also previously led "tree walks" with the community. "I enjoy talking to and helping people connect with trees," St. Sauveur said. "It's really a community effort from professionals in Knoxville engaging and involving the community in trees." TEACHING KNOXVILLE ABOUT TREES Nicholas St. Sauveur, district manager, Cortese Tree Specialists, a Davey company office, Residential/Commercial services, is a volunteer arborist with Trees Knoxville, a nonprofit aimed at informing the community and providing care to the urban forest in Knoxville, Tennessee. St. Sauveur, who attended a five-week class to learn how to become a volunteer arborist nearly half a decade ago,
