23 November/December 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN SAFETY DAVEY AT NORTH AMERICAN INSPECTORS CHAMPIONSHIP Tim Cheever, manager, motor carrier safety support, corporate safety, has been a voting member of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) for the past four years on various committees devoted to connecting regulators, law enforcement, and industry leaders in the name of promoting safe and secure commercial vehicles on the road. This year marked Davey's largest involvement yet in CVSA's annual North American Inspectors Championship (NAIC) event, in Indianapolis, Indiana. NAIC is held to test and recognize commercial vehicle inspector knowledge. A spray truck and a bucket truck for hydraulic brake system training at NAIC were provided courtesy of Mike Volz, district manager, Indianapolis offi ce, Residential/Commercial services, and Josh Perro, area manager, Great Lakes region, Eastern Utility services. Pictured is the motor carrier support team who participated in NAIC judging this year, including Tyler Alley, Richard Bane, Nichole Cefaratti, Tim Cheever, Ryan Foytik, David Huizar, Matt Jerome, Chris Lewis, "Stanley" Adam McPeek, Ashley Roberts, Dustin Roberts, Kenny Rowe, Matt Roy, Mike Schatz, Thomas Sillitoe, Jon "JT" Tanguay, Doug Trice, Juan "Johnny" Valdez, and Regie Wilson. It was a hot day when Thomas "T.J." Williams, PHC technician, Hamden offi ce, was spraying a dogwood tree for a long-time client at their home in Southington, Connecticut. The client was lying in a lawn chair nearby when Williams quickly realized he was unresponsive. Williams rushed over to help the man, who was suffering from heat exhaustion, and comforted him while his wife and daughter called 911. Williams stayed with them until an ambulance arrived. "He told me later that he appreciated me sitting with him," Williams said. "I think the biggest thing was that I was able to keep everyone calm." HEAT EXHAUSTION HELP As Matthew Morrison, senior consulting forester, Utility Vegetation Management services (UVM), Davey Resource Group (DRG), and Chase Schneider, technician, UVM, DRG, were driving to a work location, they saw smoke rising near a railroad in Whittier, California. When they pulled over to inspect the smoke's origin, they found a small brush fi re near a cactus starting to spread towards the nearby railroad ties and tracks. After calling for help, the two began to tame the fi re by using their fi ve-gallon water pack until emergency personnel arrived. "When we saw what was happening, we knew we had to do something," Morrison said. "We ended up spraying the entire water pack we keep in our trucks and throwing dirt on the fi re until there were no visible fl ames left." BRUSH FIRE HALTED Thomas "T.J." Williams said he wasn't sure was happening with his client at the time, but that he was prepared to perform CPR, which he is certifi ed to do through Davey, if it was necessary.
