8 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2023 An EF-1 tornado, with peak winds of 97 mph, caused a path of destruction through Highlands Ranch, Colorado, located south of Denver. Sean Hoes, district manager, South Denver office, said tornadoes are not typical in the area. "It blew in around 4:30 p.m. We could see the funnel cloud from the office. Within 15 minutes, the phone started ringing. In response, I immediately drove out to a neighborhood, and saw hundreds of trees fully blown over. Trees were laying on the ground, houses, across streets and fences, fully uprooted," Hoes said. The East, North, Southeast, and West Denver offices all pitched in to help the South Denver office with cleanup efforts. "Our office had three crews of three, and the other four offices each had a couple of crews working each day for about three weeks," Hoes said. TORNADO HITS HIGHLANDS RANCH COLORADO AREA Gerry Tuzon, foreman, South Denver office, said one of his crews moved around 25 to 30 cubic yards of storm debris per day. "On a normal day, we might remove five to 10 yards of material," Tuzon said. Hoes added, "All of the offices got right on board. We could all see how severe the damage was, and everyone jumped in to help, including offices with certified crane operators. No one had any issues. We made it as safe as possible for our people and the clients. Everyone did a great job, response-wise." MISSION East Denver office: Noei Alanis, Laura Anderson, Ali Cross, Hannah Dukes, Sam Laitsch, Jack Mazzone, Mor- gan Nash, Oaken Oles, Matt Sisler and Izaiah Valdespino. North Denver office: Dave Crady, Jason Eggert, Juan Flores Ramirez, Kaiela Hobart, Levi Kowalenko, Craig Marchinkoski, Max Olsen, Devon Premer, Kylie Taylor and Tony Whitney. A South Denver office client's tree was uprooted by the late June tornado. "We filled up the truck so quickly. On one day, we filled up the truck three times," said Gerry Tuzon, foreman, South Denver office.
