22 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2023 LEADERSHIP Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning, was a keynote speaker at the 37th annual Ohio Employee Ownership Conference hosted by Kent State University's Ohio Employee Ownership Center (OEOC), a nonprofit outreach organization. The conference brought managers and leaders of employee-owned companies together to discuss important employee-owned company topics including governance, best practices, culture, communications, and more. During Reid's speech, she announced Davey would partner with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant one tree for each person who registered for the OEOC conference – a total of 402 trees. REID SPEAKS AT OHIO EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP CONFERENCE DAVEY SPONSORS LANDSCAPE RECRUITING EVENT Davey was a silver sponsor of the National Association of Landscape Professionals' (NALP) National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC) held at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. The event, which combines competitive events and a career fair, attracted nearly 600 landscape and horticulture students from 47 colleges. A total of 20 employees from Commercial Landscape Services (CLS), recruiting, Residential/Commercial (R/C) services, and the Davey Institute attended. Davey hosted the Arboriculture Techniques Climbing competition, which combined teams of two; one participating in the climbing event and the other in the throwline event. "It's a great event that brings students and employers in the green industry together. We interact with the next generation, and the schools cheer each other on and support each other even though they're extremely competitive," said Cindy Schwab, regional recruiting manager, corporate recruiting. John Wright, vice president of operations, CLS, said they brought all battery-powered equipment, including mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, and edgers to display so the students could get a sense of what crews take out to a job site. "This is one of the best events we attend. You're right there with the students, get to know them, and cheer them on during the competitions. It helps build a relationship with them as part of the recruiting process," Wright added.
