9 May/June 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN On the first day of the storm, the North Austin office received 475 voicemails from clients asking for assistance. All four crews from the North Austin office worked on storm recovery efforts throughout the month of February and into March. Presta anticipates they'll be responding to calls from Mara through the rest of the summer. During the second week of Mara recovery efforts, five employees traveled to assist from the South Houston office, as well as three employees from the North Houston office, all staying for two weeks. The following week, three Dallas office employees traveled to Austin and helped for two weeks. "My crews and the crews that came in from out of town learned a lot from each other. Our Davey family grew. We got to meet a lot of employees we hadn't met before," Presta said. Jess Divin, district manager, East San Antonio office, said their office received 100 calls a day for the first couple of weeks after the storm hit. All three crews, a total of nine employees from the East San Antonio office, worked on storm cleanup non-stop during that time. "The San Antonio area is getting hit with a lot of extreme weather. It's up, down, up, down like a yo-yo – we go from dry to wet, and hot to cold. We roll with the punches and keep smiling," Divin said. East San Antonio Crew Helps Client in Need Robert Adcock, sales arborist, was driving by the home of one of the East San Antonio office's clients, who is an elderly woman. "I noticed someone in the driveway struggling to clear branches and large limbs, and stopped to check if help was needed. The client's daughter was in the driveway, trying to clear a path to get to her mother, who had been without power for a day and a half from the storm," Adcock said. Adcock dragged large limbs off the driveway, and the client's daughter was able to reach her mother and drive her to her home. The client called soon after to have the East San Antonio office come out to clear the downed brush and damage from around her home and made it a point to thank Adcock again for their help clearing the driveway. "Building a relationship with long-term clients is key to our business," Adcock added. Winter Storm Mara coated the trees in Austin with a thick layer of ice in late January and early February.
