DataLink, a subsidiary of Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), provides fiber optic infrastructure and communications technology services on the island. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and is a popular tourist spot known for its beaches and coral reefs. Visitors there enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass bottom boat tours. The DRG Utility Asset Management services (UAM) GIS team included GIS field technician Efren Hernandez Alvarez, as well as GPS field technicians Ben Armbruster and Patrick Kelliher. They inventoried 21,687 poles. The team visited each pole, GPS located it, checked for its correct GPS coordinates, and photographed the attachments. "This is important to the utility company as the attachments involve a permitting process, and companies can be fined if an unpermitted attachment is present," said Roland Pratt, account manager, UAM. The team also measured and recorded the height of the lowest source of power and every attachment on each pole. All of the attachments are supposed to be spaced out 40 inches from the lowest power line, so the workers accessing the pole at height are able to work safely in the power zone. Additionally, the team documented potential safety hazards they came across such as low sagging conductors or abandoned equipment. Scott Anderson, project developer, noted the GIS support team played a key role in making this project a success. Timothy Gaunt, account manager, built the setup for field collection, data review, and delivery processes. Madisen Keyes, geospatial technician, reviewed data quality and created client deliverables. Production manager Carla Waldron was involved in the project from bid to completion. "The utility workers from CUC were all very helpful, super nice, and easy to work with. DataLink was happy with the data, and we received positive feedback from them," Pratt said. Efren Hernandez Alvarez, Ben Armbruster, and Patrick Kelliher completed a pole inventory of the entire island of Grand Cayman.
