21 March/April 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN CLASSROOM SESSION TURNS INTO RECRUITING SUCCESS Josh Fritz, district manager, Hartney Greymont, a Davey company, Boston North Shore office, led an air tool classroom and field session at the University of Massachusetts-Am- herst's (UMass Amherst) Stockbridge School of Agriculture for students in an introduction to agriculture class. He was assisted by his son Caleb Fritz, trimmer, Hartney Greymont, Cape Cod office, and Jeffrey Dufour, trimmer, Hartney Greymont, Needham office. Fritz spoke with student Teagan Pratt, and learned of her interest in forest ecology and her desire to protect the forest. Fritz recruited Pratt, and she is now an intern at the Concord office. "Watching students' eyes open up, and all of a sudden seeing that light bulb moment is why I do these classroom sessions," Fritz said. "It's been a challenge to try to find employees in the arboriculture field. I try to think outside the box to reach students in as many different majors as possible. Working outside and doing sustainable work can make for a fulfilling career. Yet, a lot of people don't think about the urban environment and urban forestry and how important it is to actually improve the environment for the urban forest so it can thrive and be sustainable. That's one way we can try to prevent and reverse global warming and climate change." Top right: Teagan Pratt, UMass Amherst student, is pictured left of Josh Fritz. Through the connection he made with her at the air tool learning session, Fritz recruited and hired Pratt as an intern at the Concord office.
