13 September/October 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN HUMAN PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IN 2022 Leaders from the health and safety department and Davey operations conducted a Human Performance Improvement (HPI) seminar in August in Huron, Ohio. Thirty-five employees attended the workshop, led by Jon Schmidt, senior regional safety specialist, Morgan Conrad, senior safety support specialist, and Michael Dye, district manager, Erica Dulka Senior Environmental Scientist Davey Resource Group, Environmental Consulting services Q: How will you think about safety differently after attending HPI? A: Attending HPI changed the way I look at Davey and safety. I have so many new ideas on how I can move forward with training the crews and going about the whole culture of safety with them. One way is to find out what trainings the crew members are missing that could help prevent close calls or incidents and have them enroll in that course. Derek Howe account manager Detroit Southwest territory, Commercial Landscape Services David Martinchek foreman FirstEnergy account Jon Corzine district manager St. Louis West office, Residential/ Commercial services Q: What's one thing you want to take back and share with your crews that you learned at HPI? A: I enjoyed Michael Dye's presentation on Crew Resource Management (CRM). Dye, a registered pilot, had two people, one acting as a pilot, the other as co-pilot, simulate flying a plane. He demonstrated the process by having us sort marbles as they fell through a funnel. Every marble that fell off the table was a failed mission. We tried again and assigned tasks to each person. This time we avoided marbles falling off the table. Similarly, by assigning specific roles and tasks in our Davey teams, we can avoid safety issues and become more efficient. Q: How do you protect and care for your co-workers? A: We routinely do our peer gear checks, making sure everyone has safe equipment. Several times a week, I'll ask the team if there have been any close calls. We talk about those, and break down what happened, and why it happened. My team knows I don't hesitate to purchase anything they need to do their jobs, especially when it is safety related. They're very willing to come to me if they have issues with any gear so we can get it replaced. It comes down to keeping everyone safe, which involves open discussion and keeping everyone's gear up to par. Q: How will you think about safety differently after attending HPI? A: I am now able to evaluate why accidents happen. Just this week, a piece of wood fell onto a tree and ricocheted out of the drop zone. We called an all stop and opened up the drop zone a little more in case it happened again. Latent errors lead to future accidents, and we are reviewing ways to prevent those. South St. Paul office. HPI is an organizational safety and business strategy which explores relationships between complex systems and people. The Bulletin has checked in with HPI attendees throughout 2022 to hear how HPI improves the effectiveness of the Davey Company.
