20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2022 LEADERSHIP The Great Lakes Operating Group held two arborist training sessions to elevate the skills of their employees in the group's eastern and western offices. An Ascending, Work Positioning, and Descending Arborist training was held over two and a half days in Ann Arbor, Michigan's Veterans Memorial Park, led by the Davey Institute's arborist skills trainers and the Davey health and safety department. The training started with gear inspection, climbing fundamentals, how to conduct a job briefing, and drop zone cone necessity. The group reviewed closed and open systems and Single Rope Systems (SRS). The participants used these techniques in the tree climbing sessions in different scenarios. This module included a train the trainer element. The trainees were North Detroit office's Cody Lamson, foreman, Casey DeCocker, trimmer, and Mike Saintonge, foreman; the Northwest Detroit office's Anthony Fisher, trimmer, Colton Lipinski, trimmer, and Mackenzie Krupsky, foreman; the South Detroit office's Eddie Bennett, foreman, Wade Karos, foreman, and Anthony Liwag, trimmer; the Toledo office's Brian Gargac, landscape foreman, Steven Buford, trimmer, and Charles Powell, trimmer; the Northeast Detroit office's Jake Atikian, trimmer, Andrew Poggi, trimmer, and Jacob Wilkins, foreman. A two and a half day Arborist Felling Module was held in Lanesboro, Minnesota at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center. They explained chainsaw maintenance, safety, and sharpening, and the six step Precision Tree Felling Plan from The Davey Safety and Training Manual. After the classroom session, the attendees went out to the woods, split into groups, and practiced base cuts, making notches in trees, and forecuts, then felled the trees. Trainees were Maier Tree & Lawn, a Davey company's Brandon Bennett, trimmer, Hunter Heightland, landscape foreman, and Drew Loechler, trimmer; the South Minneapolis office's Matt Sharrow, foreman, Luke Myers, foreman, and Daniel Kamish, trimmer; the North Minneapolis office's Ryley Wolfe, trimmer, and Jake Hauger, trimmer; the South St. Paul office's Rachel Kirchner, trimmer, Isaac Bries, trimmer; and Davey Resource Group (DRG), Environmental Consulting services' environmental scientists Brittany Allen and Benjamin Rietz.
