9 July/August 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Record flooding devastated the city of Grand Forks, British Columbia in the spring of 2018. Approximately 2 inches of rain fell over a 24-hour period. Part of the Boundary Country region, bordering the boundary between Canada and the U.S., Grand Forks is 310 miles east of Vancouver, B.C. The Kettle and Granby Rivers rose to the highest levels since 1948. The flooding destroyed homes and businesses and displaced more than 2,800 residents. In response, the city created a Flood Mitigation Program. Preventative measures including dikes, flood walls, riprap, a stormwater system, and floodplain restoration are part of the mitigation plan. In preparation for the construction of dikes in Grand Forks, Davey undertook the removal of 80 mature trees overhanging the Kettle and Granby Rivers in only two and half weeks in March 2022. "It was a race against time with water levels rising and bird nesting season about to begin," said Matt Edge, district manager, Kelowna Residential office. Edge managed the tree removal project, and two Davey Canada teams took on the challenge. Kelowna and Burnaby Residential office groundpersons Eliza Ross and Tehgann Anderson, along with Axel St. Jean, foreman, worked along- side Nanaimo tree surgery employees Daniel Kannimae, general foreman, and Sam Morrison, groundperson. VISION BUILDING A LASTING RELATIONSHIP IN MASSACHUSETTS David Gingrich knows a few things about maintaining a strong, lasting relationship with his clients. Gingrich, who joined Davey in 1994, is a sales arborist in the Hartney Greymont, a Davey company, Needham office. This past winter, Gingrich worked with his client Wollaston Golf Club, a private, 18-hole course in Milton, Massachusetts, for pruning and removal work on the largely oak, hickory and white pine dominant landscape. Gingrich has been working with Wollaston for over 20 years to perform annual winter tree care work. "I react when they call," Gingrich said. "I don't let an issue or a call wait a few days. If they call me at 6 a.m., I take the call. And if they leave a message, I call right back. So, communication is key. And commitment to follow through. If they ask for something, I follow through, whether it's a proposal, or work, or scheduling." Wollaston Golf Club has been a Davey client for over 20 years. David Gingrich credits the longevity of their partnership with Davey to, in part, maintaining regular contact with the client. "It's a pleasure working with a private course like Wollaston, and I'm humbled with the trust they put in myself and Davey."
