THE DAVEY BULLETIN
MISSION
DAVEY TEAMS WORKING TOGETHER IN VIRGINIA
Located west of the District of Columbia, Fairfax, Virginia's
Fairfax County Park Authority has 420 parks on over 23,000
acres of land, offering an impressive 325 miles of trails.
Fairfax County is home to more than 1.1 million people.
Public spaces of Fairfax County are managed by Davey's
Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) Dulles and Lorton
territories and Residential/Commercial services (R/C)
Alexandria, North Virginia East, and North Virginia West
offices. Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI)
manages natural resource planning and assessments and
uses TreeKeeper
®
as part of its work. John Jastrzembski,
business developer, Davey Business Development Team,
manages the workflow for the county. Requests for service
come in daily from any number of approximately 12,000
Fairfax County employees.
"We typically have two to three R/C crews a day working
on Fairfax County jobs. If there is an emergency where trees
have fallen over, CLS may step in to do the work. They may
not have as much of a backlog and can quickly respond to
storm cleanup. CLS also handles storm water management
and pond restoration," Jastrzembski said. "The goal is to try
to take the crisis out of management and bring efficiencies
to operations."
The CLS territories help manage the Fairfax County
Park Authority's athletic fields, school fields, lake fronts,
Eric Breeden, foreman, North Virginia West office, works on a Fairfax
County Park Authority tree removal.

recreational centers, and golf courses.
The R/C offices handle tree removals, storm damage, tree
pruning, and invasive species management. In addition,
the North Virginia West office maintains 12 feet of clearance
from the roof of the county's driverless wireless electric
shuttle, named Relay. The shuttle's receiver needs the
clearance to get the information needed to move. Relay
runs by using GIS, Lidar, and odometry. "Trees grow and
branches often block the GPS of this driverless shuttle.
It's a very specific type of pruning," Jastrzembski said.
Long-term planning for Fairfax County Redevelopment and
Housing Authority is handled by using TreeKeeper
®
to
assess inventory and enables the county to plan their budget
cycles accordingly. "We're helping them plan their green
portfolios," Jastrzembski said.
The ability to pull service lines together to work collabora-
tively is the objective. "There are lots of opportunities to
satisfy the complex needs of clients," Jastrzembski said.
