19 July/August 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN FACTORS AND FORCES IN TULSA AND OKLAHOMA CITY DRG pre-planners are the first eyes on the trees before utility line clearance crews arrive. It is important for them to know where the structural defects are in the trees, and where the challenges are for utility crews. "It's all about matching the right personnel and the right equipment to the characteristics of the tree to develop a safe work plan," said R.J. Laverne, manager, education and training, Davey Institute. To help the pre-planners prepare, the Davey Institute held two-day Factors and Forces training sessions in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for DRG employees. The following factors are explored during the training: • Tree strength loss caused by weak branch and root attachments. • Tree decay. • Damage to trees. • Presence or absence of response growth in trees. • Site conditions. Additional Factors and Forces sessions are scheduled across the U.S. through the remainder of the year, including in Denver, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Knoxville and New England.
