16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2022 Brice Kundinger, project manager, Eastern Utility Rail Division, spent a day with 14 students in the Arborist Technician program at Mid-State Technical College in central Wisconsin. A key guest for the college's Utility Arboriculture Day, Kundinger discussed career opportunities, the importance of job briefings, and best practices for safety. With Kundinger's guidance, all students got hands-on experience performing clearance pruning on lines that were dead and grounded. "They were really engaged, positive, attentive, and interested in the utility side of things," Kundinger said. Chris Everest, foreman, Portland, Maine office, assisted in teaching a morning and afternoon Hort 150 course to about 30 students at Southern Maine Community College. "We went over climbing systems – everything from your basic Blake's hitch and hip thrusting up a tree, all the way up to the new single rope systems with ascenders," Everest said. At the Davey Institute, seniors from Hiram College, most of whom were in entrepreneurship-related education programs, visited for a lab tour and learned about the environmental-related careers Davey has to offer. "For students currently coming out of college, there's a lot of awareness around environmental concerns and climate change. Those entering the green industry don't have to be in an environmental or biological major to support the industry," Jim Zwack, vice president and general manager, Davey Institute, said. LEADERSHIP Brice Kundinger, project manager, Eastern Utility Rail Division, provided hands-on utility work training with Central Wisconsin's Mid-State Technical College students.
