14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2022 QUICK ACTION PREVENTS FIRE SPREAD Davey Resource Group's Dalton Scheeler, UVM technician, was having lunch at Birch Grove Park in Northfield, New Jersey. Scheeler noticed the smell of smoke and thought there must be a controlled burn nearby. "A few minutes later, smoke began to rise where a car left a parking spot. I went over to investigate and found a two-foot round fire in a pile of dry, dead pine needles. I was able to extinguish the fire by pouring water, smothering, and separating the burn site to prevent the fire from spreading further," Scheeler said. Scheeler found a cigarette butt in the burnt needles that may have been tossed from the parked car. He called the police department, who sent the fire department out to ensure the fire was completely put out. SMALL ACT OF KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY David Buis made a little girl's day when he took the time to wave to her from the bucket he was working in before she headed off to school. Her father wrote to the Davey corporate Facebook page to share the story. Buis is a general foreman on the Alectra East account for The Davey Tree Expert Company of Canada, Limited. He was working on a black locust tree in the neighborhood and saw her inquisitively watching him trim the tree. "I waved to her and decided to take the bucket up higher, so she could see how high it could go. It didn't take any time out of my day. It seemed like such a small act of kindness, but it obviously went a long way. I wasn't expecting her dad to post anything on social media." Buis encourages others to take these opportunities to engage with kids and community members, because you never know who you'll inspire to join our industry, and it's important to be approachable. Dalton Scheeler OPENING MINDS TO ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE Tonay Gooday-Ervin, inventory arborist, Davey Resource Group, Environmental Consulting, was a keynote speaker on a panel for Rhode Island Environmental Education Association's (RIEEA) Trees for the People: Environmental Justice for Rhode Island's Frontline Communities Conference. The panel addressed the connection between trees and environmental justice. Gooday-Ervin and the two other panelists serve on the steering committee for the city of Providence's Tree Plan. "As an Indigenous and Latinx person, who also has a background in arboriculture, and as a person who has family going back generations in Rhode Island, I felt particularly impassioned to educate my community on the benefits of municipal trees and particularly impassioned to uplift the voices of the community I love so much," Gooday- Ervin said. "Being able to speak to RIEEA about that experience, my experience as someone tied to tree work professionally, and my experience as someone who grew up learning about indigenous ecology was moving. I saw a lot of minds opened." Tonay Gooday-Ervin is a member of the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Arizona and is a third-generation Cuban American. Gooday-Ervin hopes attendees learned how each of them has experienced challenges while doing environmental justice work, and the need for a shift in how communities of color are included in that work. David Buis tries to acknowledge people, especially children, when he sees they are curious about the work he's doing. Buis does it to be nice, but he also has a safety reason. He doesn't want them walking into the drop zone or work zone trying to get his attention. INTEGRITY
