17 July/August 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Dozens of college students in two-and-four-year college programs attended the 2022 National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC) with support from various Davey operations. More than 800 students compete in the NCLC each year, a three-day competition organized by the National Association of Landscape Professionals that brings together landscape and horticulture students, green industry companies, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. In addition to Davey serving as the lead sponsor for this year's event, various local Davey operations supported college teams that attended. Commercial Landscape Services support to the team from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland included Davey-branded jackets, shirts and hats for all students and faculty who attended. The Residential/Commercial (R/C) services Western operating group provided new climbing gear to the team from Brigham Young University that was used during the climbing competition. And the R/C services Great Lakes West operating group supported the team from Michigan State University. Brigitte Orrick, director of recruiting and employee development, said NCLC provides a chance to connect with current, former and potential interns at the different colleges in attendance. "There are over 60 colleges with green majors attending, and our interaction with the students is very direct," Orrick said. "We interact with students making an investment in themselves to pursue education in arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture and landscaping. We see current Davey interns, and talk with students about internships and full-time positions after they graduate." Davey served as the lead sponsor for this year's event in March. Davey's corporate recruiting team represented Davey, and regional skills trainers from the Davey Institute managed the tree climbing competition. Jonathan McNeil, district manager, Arborguard Tree Specialists Atlanta office, supported the skills trainers. And John Wright, regional manager, Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) Midwest region, attended with employees who shared career opportunities in Davey's CLS operations. "This was the group's first chance to come together as a team and interact on the corporate campus since joining Davey in 2020," said Joe Gregory, regional operations manager, DRG, Environmental Consulting services. The Ohio Engineering team works on the surveying and engineering of Davey's development projects, including the corporate office third wing addition and the Davey Science, Employee Education, and Development (SEED) Campus. DRG Environmental Consulting services employees also attended a training in April, learning how to operate drones for spraying and seeding work, including Jacob Brown, environmental technician, Greg Butler, environmental technician, Reid Prindle, environmental technician, and Jeremy Weber, senior associate consultant. The two-day training included classroom work and flight practice at the SEED Campus. Each trainee completed close to nine hours of flight time towards Davey's required 15 hours.
