12 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2022 UTILITY CREWS WORK TOGETHER FOLLOWING OHIO STORM Left: A pole cracks in half during a destructive Northeast Ohio storm. Right: Strong winds and two and a half inches of rain fell during a storm in Wayne and Holmes counties in Ohio, which were under a state of emergency. During a late spring storm, wind gusts of around 90 mph downed trees and broke poles in Holmes and Wayne counties in Ohio. A total of 77 employees responded to the storm. Davey employees from the Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative, Inc. account were assisted by Davey crews from the Carroll Electric Cooperative, City of Cuyahoga Falls, FirstEnergy, and Blue Grass Energy accounts. Glenn W. Miller, President and CEO, Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative, Inc., said they had 252 broken poles, over 25 miles of line on the ground, and 10 of their 18 substations were without transmission power. "With the commitment and passion Davey's staff gave to safe and efficient power restoration, we were able to have all members' power restored in nine days," Miller said. Mark Mittiga, account manager, Central Utility services, said the rapid response the crews provided Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative was excellent. "Our teams responded efficiently in a time of need, performed quality work to save as much electric hardware as possible, and most impor- tantly, did so safely. Every crew had a plan and remained focused on each specific job. The care Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative provided for our crews was top of the line as well," Mittiga said. PERSEVERANCE CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS AVAILABLE ONLINE Davey employees who need Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain their International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist ® accreditation can do so through online courses provided by the Davey Institute. Davey's Learning Management System (LMS) for education and training allows employees to access a variety of extension lessons on subjects such as tree care and lawn care. The lessons consist of a document and a short quiz. Most courses contain approximately 10 lessons all on different topicspertaining to the green industry, such as tree insects and diseases, soils and more. Employees can access the site at Davey.com/lms. Many tree-related lessons on the site have been approved for ISA re-certification credits. In addition, many states have approved Davey's courses for state pesticide applicator CEU credits. For more information, email education.help@davey.com.
