23 May/June 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN PENELEC CREWS ASSIST IN CLEARING ALLEGHENY RIVER TRAIL CONNECTION Vernon Kern, board member, Allegheny River Trail in Clarion County (ARTinCC), requested a donation of time and equipment to help clear a bike trail connection between Foxburg and Emlenton, Pennsylvania. In mid-January, up against the time constraint of an incoming snowstorm, FirstEnergy Penelec crews volunteered a half-day of work to ARTinCC. Two crews worked together, including Philp Uplinger, foreman, and Michael Schaberl, trimmer, along with Matt Dehart, foreman, and Fred Christensen, trimmer. They used chippers to clean up brush and logs that a previous volunteer group was unable to process due to lack of large enough equipment for the job. "The crews did a great job clearing approximately 300 yards of trailhead. ARTinCC will utilize the chips for the trailhead," said Bill Bunker, operations manager, Eastern Utility. FEEDING HEALTH CARE HEROES Davey provided a monetary donation to support a luncheon for 715 health care employees at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio. This effort was coordinated by the Kent Area Chamber of Commerce (KACC). Davey was one of several Portage County businesses that participated. Lunch was provided to physicians, nurses, therapists, safety forces, administrative and office personnel, medical and nursing students, laboratory technicians, custodial and cafeteria staff, hospital volunteers and more. Lunch was provided by Davey to hospital staff during afternoon and evening shifts at University Hospitals in Ravenna, Ohio. Right: Davey crews helped clear 300 yards of bike trail connection. This work is part of a larger goal to complete the Pittsburgh to Erie bike trail. Left: Employees volunteered time and equipment to the Allegheny River Trail in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. ARTinCC is a member-supported, non-profit organization.
