HUMAN PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IN 2022
Leaders from safety and operations conducted a Human Performance Improvement (HPI)
seminar in February in Pleasanton, California. Thirty-six employees attended the workshop,
led by Jon Schmidt, regional safety specialist, Morgan Conrad, safety support specialist,
Michael Dye, district manager, South St. Paul office, and Mike Santos, safety manager, the
Davey Tree Surgery Company. HPI is an organizational safety and business strategy which
explores relationships between complex systems and people. The Bulletin will check in with
HPI attendees in 2022 to hear how HPI improves the effectiveness of the Davey Company.
Keep an eye out for
updates on Davey's
approach to safety,
as Davey corporate
safety director Tim Walsh
will discuss
safety at Davey

Q: How do you protect and care for your coworkers?
A: I try to be upfront with them, and keep a good line of
communication, so that I know what they need or want
from me so that we can all be on the same page. We
want to be safe, and at the end of the day, all go home
to our families. I believe it starts with communication
with each other out in the field, to know what's happening,
what's going on, and what's needed.

Q: How will you think about safety differently after
attending HPI?
A: I am new to the position as a general foreman. I try
to teach my team to prevent any human errors and
mistakes. We need to have more focus and attention
on our daily activities to make sure we're doing the tasks
correctly and take action before anything happens.
Q: How will you think about safety differently after
attending HPI?
A: I've worked for companies that preach safety, but seeing
it from a leadership role, there's a lot that goes into it. You
want to be productive, but you want the crews to be safe.
Finding that fine balance between the two is crucial, but
we have been working on it for a long time as a company
and it's refreshing to see how we're approaching it.
Q: What's one thing you want to take back and share
with your crews that you learned at HPI?
A: Both good and bad outcomes are a team effort. HPI
taught me to shift my way of thinking as a manager to
promote a team attitude in getting everyone home safely.
Safety isn't just about protecting myself – it's about
protecting my team, my family, my company, and those
around me.
