7 January/February 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN MISSION Davey's Charlotte Residential/Commercial (R/C) office conducted tree maintenance work at two cemeteries in the Spartanburg, South Carolina, area thanks to a relationship cultivated by Davey's National Business Development Team (NBDT). NBDT client Park Lawn Corporation manages cemeteries throughout the U.S. Park Lawn acquired two cemeteries in 2020, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg and Boiling Springs Memorial Gardens in Boiling Springs, South Carolina. Both needed tree maintenance and landscaping services. "There were hazard trees on the properties," said Herb Landmann, project manager, NBDT. "Some of the shrubs around the onsite chapels were overgrown and not maintained well. A lot of it was difficult work. A crane was needed and there were a number of difficult removals over graves and monuments that had to be carefully done." Between the two sites, the Charlotte office pruned or removed 275 trees and shrubs from April to October 2021 and completed the work in three phases. A challenge for the project is the fact these were active cemeteries with graveside services daily, said Ray Betz, district manager, Charlotte office. The crew had to navigate around the funeral schedules and work when the sounds of equipment, chainsaws and chippers wouldn't disturb services. "Working in a cemetery there are so many obstacles," Betz said. "We were able to mitigate those without one piece of property damaged. That's a significant accomplishment. You also need to be aware of the public because they are there for a very emotional reason. I talked to the crews before we left about being respectful, and we had zero issues with that. We aren't a large office, but we are fortunate to have very professional and veteran staff." Park Lawn also needed landscape maintenance work conducted. Steve Freeman, project manager, Commercial Landscape Services, Charleston Air Force Base, helped Landmann determine the best way to accomplish the landscaping work. Freeman recommended one of his subcontractors perform the landscaping. "The client was impressed by the professionalism and quality work performed by our crews," Landmann said. "The collaboration and communication among Ray, Steve and I was crucial to the successful completion of the multi-phase, multiple service line project."
