CLIMBING WORKSHOP DEVOTED TO WOMEN
Female climbers from Davey's Residential/Commercial ser-
vices Midwest region operations attended a women's tree
climbing workshop in Chicago.
The North Central Operating Group hosted the workshop.
This workshop for new and experienced climbers was an
opportunity to learn climbing techniques and network with
other women climbers at Davey.
Michaela Ramsey, climber, North Milwaukee office, was
encouraged to see so many female climbers in one place.
An empowering part of the workshop for Ramsey was
simply having the ability to learn from her peers.
"Everyone had something different to offer and we all have
our own strengths and weaknesses," Ramsey said. "I'm
a smaller climber, so when it comes to moving around in a
tree really lightly and gently I can offer advice on that. Whereas
someone else who does a lot of bucket work, they were
able to give me tips and tricks on maneuvering the bucket
better. Being able to lay our strengths and weaknesses out
on the table was just an incredible opportunity."
The workshop inspired Ramsey to work toward management,
safety and training positions. She believes more women
should seek these positions.
"I need to ramp up my skills, so I can meet my goals of
becoming a skills trainer or getting into management,"
Ramsey said. "There are women who want to learn and
want to become great climbers. It's our job as experienced
climbers to teach them and get them up in trees, because
that's the only way they are going to learn."
Ramsey said she wants to see this workshop happen again
and hopes it will expand beyond the Midwest.
"Let's do it again as quickly as possible," Ramsey said. "It
was an incredible experience. We need to get every single
woman at Davey involved."
