16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2022 STEWARDSHIP SOUTH ST. PAUL VOLUNTEERS WITH THE COMMUNITY The South St. Paul R/C office had their hands full with volunteer work in 2021. The office partnered with a nonprofit in the city, Creative Enterprise Zone, who started a new project called the "100 Trees Initiative" to reforest lower income areas. In the spring, Davey volunteers planted a semi-truck full of bareroot trees in community gravel beds. Gravel beds help trees increase their fibrous root systems, which increases a tree's survivability rate. The trees stay in the gravel beds until they are ready to be planted in the fall. In October, eight Davey volunteers joined the community to plant the trees around the city. The office prepared the various planting sites the day before by loosening the compacted soil to make it easier for volunteers to plant the trees. The event preparation and execution took months of planning organized by district manager Mike Dye, assistant district manager Jake Ryg and sales arborist Emily Mumford. "Participating in events like this shows the community the type of people we are at Davey, in hopes it too will spark a career interest in someone who may not have considered a career at Davey before," Dye said. DAVEY HELPS BEAUTIFY DOWNTOWN YOUNGSTOWN The Youngstown R/C office has a strong relationship with Youngstown State University, so when the school's art department asked the Davey team for help with an off-campus project, the team was eager to learn more. A large urban retaining wall covered in vines and brush stood out as an eye sore in the town, and the art students wanted to paint a large mural on it. The Youngstown crew cleared the Youngstown State University art students pose for a photo in front of the completed mural. overgrown vegetation on the wall so the students could beautify the area. "The location really needed an uplift, so I was glad to see this emotional revitalization take place in this area," said Duane Stevenson, foreman at the Youngstown office. "The wall is located in a unique spot, so I think the people there will really appreciate it." Left: The St. Paul R/C office took part in a "100 Trees Initiative" to plant trees around the city.
