13 January/February 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN INTEGRITY AIDING YOUNG WOMAN AFTER CAR ACCIDENT While on his way to safety training, Nick Spino came upon a car accident on an on-ramp in Windsor, Ontario. He stopped to make sure the young female driver was OK after she hit a patch of water and her car hydroplaned. The driver crashed with the front of the car pressed against the guardrail. The driver was shaken up, Spino said. Spino, a regional skills trainer, helped her move the car to the shoulder so the backend wasn't impeding traffic getting onto the highway. She was able to call a family member to come help her. "I didn't do anything we wouldn't want someone to do for us if we were in that situation," he said. "I'm glad she was OK and no one was hurt. If it's safe to do so, it never hurts to stop. A manager would rather hear you were a few minutes late because you stopped to help someone." HELPING A STRANDED DRIVER John and Tracey Merck were driving to a doctor's appointment when they had car trouble. Fortunately for the Mercks, their car stopped in the parking lot of a Georgia chainsaw shop where Josh Pressley, area manager, Eastern Utility services, happened to be. "I asked Joshua for help and without hesitation he offered to help me anyway he could," John Merck said. Merck's car needed transmission fluid, so Pressley gave him a ride to a nearby store, got the fluid and topped the car off. Soon, the Mercks were back on their way. "You have a good man working for you," Merck said. "Me and my wife are grateful for his help." Pressley said it was just like any other day on the job for Davey. "I told him it was no problem at all and if he needed anything else, just let me know," Pressley said. Josh Pressley Gabriella A. is the young woman Nick Spino assisted. She wrote this wonderful comment about Nick. "I just wanted to contact your company and say thank you to the gentleman that stopped and helped me this morning on the Dougall on-ramp in Windsor after I crashed and was in an accident. He was the only person that stopped to see if I was okay, so I just wanted to say thank you to him." PREVENTING A ROOF FROM COLLAPSING A crew from the San Francisco Residential /Commercial office assisted with emergency storm work when a big storm rolled through Pacifica, California. The office contracts with the city of Pacifica for emergency tree work, and a crew was removing a large cypress tree when a woman flagged down Stephen Howard, assistant district manager. She was home alone with her 7-year-old son. It was dark, raining heavily, and the power was out. "She was worried about her roof, because it was a flat roof and it wasn't draining," Howard said. "There were only a few drainage points on the roof. She was worried it would fill up, collapse and cause damage." Howard climbed up and cleared the drains. Later, she shared a message on Instagram thanking Howard. "What he did could have possibly saved my family room from caving in, and I can't tell you how grateful we are that he was there," she said. "You have some real decent human beings working for you." Stephen Howard, without hesitation, helped a woman with her flooding roof. "She was thankful we were able to do that for her," Howard said. "We want people to see that we are reliable and want to keep them safe." LIVING OUR VALUES Do your employees emphasize integrity? Email their stories to bulletin@davey.com
