23 January/February 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN CLS TRAINING INCORPORATES DIGITAL TOOLS Digital tools for client interaction were introduced to mountain region Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) employees during a recent training event. Dan Morgan, regional manager, government/projects, described the training as a condensed version of the Davey Institute of Grounds Management (D.I.G.M.). "We took a different approach to some of the field courses," Morgan said. Using iPads and GoFormz ® , attendees created proposals for reviewing with and submitting to a CLS client. The training was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and attendees broke into groups using the digital forms and the hotel property to create proposal scenarios for addressing plant health care needs, pest management, landscaping improvements and other services. "They took the plant health care information they had learned over the four-day training session and went out with the iPad to find landscape issues, take pictures, fill in the GoFormz proposal and then present that to the class and the instructors," Morgan said. "For some employees who haven't used this kind of technology before and are new to it, it was eye-opening how easy it is rather than dragging paper back to the office. We even have the ability for a client to sign off on these proposals on the spot." Attendees also learned to use iPads to inventory plants, trees and irrigation systems – using Davey software programs – and then share that info with their clients. "We plan to add this technology-based proposal work into courses in the future," Morgan said. Attendees at a Commercial Landscape Services training session held in Colorado in the fall and their operations locations included: Andre Archuleta, operations manager, West Coast region; Cliff Baker, Peterson Air Force Base territory; Blake Bushley, Denver CSC; Matt Delaney, Malmstrom Air Force Base territory; Hector Diaz-Mercado, Denver CSC; Jeremy Eckert, Ellsworth Air Force Base territory; Chris Feliciano, Colorado Springs South territory; Devin Jaynes, Malmstrom; Dale Nikander, U.S. Air Force Academy Military Housing territory; Mike Shippy, San Francisco territory; Justin Vander Tuig, Denver CSC. SAFELY REMOVING TREES FROM WIRES UNDER TENSION Trees falling into power lines is a common challenge, particularly during storm response work, facing Davey Utility services crews. That's why Utility services collaborated with the corporate safety department to hold the Securing and Releasing Tensioned Utility Lines training program. Two sessions were held in 2021, in May and November, and provided attendees with the knowledge and skills to safely remove trees that fall on tensioned power lines. The training focuses on securing and removing lodged trees on utility lines. A variety of related topics are incorporated, including general personal safety PPE, job briefings, Factors and Forces, drop zone and strike zone policies, Davey rigging kit instructions and more. The wires under tension training program brings employees to Kent, Ohio, to learn how to safely remove trees from power lines.
