20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2022 DAVEY SPEAKERS ENLIGHTEN TCI EXPO CROWDS Three experts from the Davey Institute spoke to attendees of TCI Expo 2021 to share knowledge and experience on women in tree care, pesticide compliance and climbing equipment. WOMEN IN TREE CARE Alex Julius, employee development and safety training specialist, participated in a moderated panel discussion as part of the Women in Tree Care Workshop. The theme of the panel was "career development," and topics included improving workplace inclusivity by recruiting diverse talent. "Inclusivity brings in more ideas, and more walks of life give you better innovation for doing good work and creating an environment in which everyone is comfortable," Julius said. PESTICIDE 'SUPERHERO' Audrey Sellepack, pesticide compliance specialist, explained how to be a pesticide compliance "superhero" by outlining a 10-step process pesticide applicators could follow to ensure compliance. ARBORISTS GATHER FOR PRECISION TRAINING MODULES Fifteen arborists from Metro New York, New England and Northlands R/C offices met at Camp Mattatuck in Plymouth, Connecticut, for a chainsaw safety and precision tree felling three-day course. It was the first module of three the offices will attend, with future modules on climbing and ascension, and technical rigging. Eamon Burke, foreman, Mount Kisco office, said the modules emphasize precision and perfection, so he's noticed a big difference in his approach to these techniques already. He enjoyed gathering with various offices for these trainings. "It exposes you to different methods of doing our job, which is huge," Burke said. "It gives you a sense of how large Davey is as a company, yet it still feels like you're all a part of one goal, one cause." As an attendee, Burke is tasked with bringing the skills he learned back to his office. "I wasn't just taught how to perform precision tree felling, but also how to instruct it," Burke said. "That's probably the most important aspect of these training modules." "I juxtaposed the story of Batman and used his origin story to show them how we can create our own origin story," Sellepack said. CLIMBING COMPONENTS Tim Bushnell, arborist skills specialist, gave a presentation titled "Climbing Component Interactions and Compatibility," showing how individual climbing components interact with each other. "If we can get climbers to focus on the tiny details of their equipment, that's going to lead to focusing on larger topics, and it's going to lead to a higher level of safety," Bushnell said. Davey employees Don Roppolo, Emmett Shutts, Eduardo Medina, Corey Shepard and Matt Salvator took part in a forum to help attendees improve how they write their work proposals, specifications and work orders. Phil Snyder, vice president of East Atlantic R/C operations, helped plan the modules. "In addition to the value of the technical learning from these programs, the benefits of our teammates building relationships across our operations is invaluable," Snyder said.
