DAVEY CANADA RAIL DIVISION AIDS IN WILDFIRE MITIGATION
When wildfires in British Columbia threated Canadian Pacific
Railway's (CP) tracks, the Davey Tree Expert Company of
Canada, Limited, Rail division modified its spray train and
five herbicide tanker trucks to aid in firefighting efforts.
"CP Rail called all its contractors and pulled all resources
available," said Greg McRae, manager, Davey Canada's Rail
division. "Within 24 hours, we brought our equipment into
the shops and had them modified to fight fire."
At the time, rail traffic transporting goods from Western
Canada could only use CP Rail lines after another major rail
carrier lost a bridge critical to its infrastructure to wildfire. It
was important to protect CP Rail's infrastructure, especially
in the more isolated corridors, given their rails were the only
avenue to Eastern Canada, McRae said.
"The spray train itself was a valuable asset, because it can
hold 105,000 gallons of water," McRae said. "Whenever
it's dry and hard to come by water, having that mobile
water supply was imperative. It wasn't only used to fight
fire along the tracks, but also used as a filling station for
other firefighting equipment."
Ten Davey Canada Rail crews worked round the clock from
July to September to help mitigate fire risks. The crews
not only worked to put out fires, but they also spread fire
retardant in the 100-foot ROWs and removed woody plant
vegetation with potential to catch fire. A mechanical crew
removed countless trees damaged by the wildfires that
were deemed a hazard to the tracks or trains.
"The seriousness of this was taken to heart by all the
employees," McRae said. "They did a fantastic job
transitioning from their normal role of vegetation
management and using those skills and the equipment
to help fight the fires."

to remove vegetation and put fire retardant down within the ROW,
Greg McRae said. The crews fought fires within the ROW and stayed
on the track with the specialty rail equipment.
