IMPRESSIVE SPRUCE INSTALLATION IN MASSACHUSETTS
A homeowner in Brookline,
Massachusetts, contacted Hartney
Greymont, a Davey company, in
Needham to install replacements for
a row of hemlocks he had removed
on his property. The client chose three,
Jarred Von Rouden, shop manager,
Needham Shop, operated the crane and
Jose Artica, foreman, Needham office,
helped Tyler Ledin, trimmer, maneuver the
trees into place.
9-inch caliper Oriental spruces, each
weighing roughly 5,000 pounds and
delivered with root balls drum laced
and wrapped in burlap. Tyler Ledin,
trimmer, Needham office, said the
challenge came with the location.
TREE INVENTORY UPDATE FOR TULSA ZOO COMPLETED
Davey Resource Group (DRG)
completed a tree inventory update
of the Tulsa Zoo, building on data
collected at the zoo in 2015. Over
the course of two weeks in April,
Sam Heywood, associate consultant,
DRG Environmental Consulting
services, collected data on 1,822
sites, including 1,786 trees. Most
were oaks, elms, hackberries, pine
and redbud, with a majority in good
health even in high foot-trafficked
areas including a new playground.
"The zoo's new horticulture director
wanted Davey to update the inventory
to better understand pruning and
maintenance schedules, and to ensure
the health of the trees and the safety
of visitors," Heywood said.
Sam Heywood did not have to enter any
animal enclosures, but said the giraffes
were very interested in his yellow safety
vest and the flamingos greeted him when
he came close.
The trees were to be planted on a
hillside, so a Davey crane set up in
the driveway had to maneuver over
a short wall and around existing trees.
"This was one of the biggest planting
jobs I've ever done, and it was the first
planting I've done using a crane. It was
an incredible experience," Ledin said.
"Most clients don't realize that Davey
can provide these huge trees and
have them planted. It's amazing what
you can accomplish with the help of a
crane and the right crew."
