11 July/August 2021 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Current U.S. Drought Monitor map of the contiguous United States as of June 29, 2021. Author: Deborah Bathke; National Drought Mitigation Center; droughtmonitor.unl.edu More than 130 Davey managers and supervisors from the Davey Tree Surgery Company attended a virtual day of safety training and utility client presentations during the annual Fire Prevention and Awareness Meeting. As in 2020, this year's training was held via Microsoft ® Teams in April due to COVID restrictions. Kevin Peters, vice president of operations, Surgery Company, said the event signifies the informal kickoff of fire season for Western operations in California, Texas and Oklahoma. Davey attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from utility representatives on fire prevention plan updates, strategic operational goals and how field-level employees can directly affect the success of meeting client expectations in a safe, productive manner. "This year I wanted to give our field-level employees a chance to shine by spotlighting them to our clients directly," Peters said. "We wanted to show our clients that what we do every day benefits them. Everything from inspecting equipment to reduce sparking and reinforcing our fire training on a daily basis comes to fruition when we're out in the field." WESTERN FIRE MEETING This year, The Cleveland Clinic and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center were recognized with the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree Campus Healthcare award due to work Davey performed on the properties. These facilities are recognized for demonstrating a commitment to improving community wellness through tree planting, education and community engagement. The Cleveland North CLS territory has planted over 100 trees on the Cleveland Clinic's Main Campus, as well as over 150 plants in pollinator DAVEY HELPS HEALTHCARE FACILITIES EARN RECOGNITION gardens across the campus. "Green spaces play a big role in healing, so the trees and gardens we've planted will have many benefits for patient wellness," said Vito Monteleone, branch manager, Cleveland North territory. "Not only do patients reap the benefits of trees and plants just by viewing them, but they'll help clean and filter the air as well." Davey Resource Group created an urban forest management plan for UT Southwestern Medical Center that set up priorities for tree care on the campus. They also conducted a tree inventory on the property and used iTree to help the facility calculate the benefits of its trees. "Not only is it important to have trees on the property to aid in patient health, but this campus is also home to students, so it provides a place of respite for them as well," said Dana Karcher, project developer, DRG. The campus is also home to a large wading bird rookery, or bird nesting colony, so the birds will appreciate the trees' benefits as well. SAFETY Drought conditions in the southwestern U.S. were one of several topics reviewed at the Davey Tree Surgery Company annual Fire Prevention and Awareness Meeting. Drought severity plays a pivotal role each fire season. Davey performed a tree inventory of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (pictured).
