MISSION
DRG UPDATES THE CHICAGO TREE CENSUS
The Morton Arboretum released the
results of the 2020 Chicago Region
Tree Census completed by Davey
Resource Group (DRG) Environmental
Consulting services. The work was
done in collaboration with the Morton
Arboretum, the Illinois Department
of Natural Resources, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture Forest
Service and the Student Conservation
Association. In total, 1,576 plots
across the city of Chicago and seven
surrounding counties were remeasured
from a 2010 census of the same region.
Lee Mueller, market manager, DRG,
said an initial analysis of the data
shows more than 172 million trees,
an increase from 157 million in 2010,
with an overall increase in urban tree
canopy in all surrounding counties
Davey Resource Group (DRG) partnered
with the Morton Arboretum to conduct the
2020 Chicago Region Tree Census (above right).
The census captured an estimated more than
170 million trees across the greater Chicago
region. The work served as an update to a
census conducted in 2010 by DRG. Pictured

except the city of Chicago. However,
the data also reveals invasive species
like buckthorn make up 36 percent of
the canopy and a loss of 6 million ash
trees from Emerald Ash Borer. Using
i-Tree Eco, the Chicago region's trees
are estimated to provide $192 million
in air quality benefits, $93 million
in carbon sequestration, and $100
million in mitigating stormwater runoff
each year.
"This is the kind of data that
benefits countless communities and
organizations that work with Davey
and the Morton Arboretum by
providing a foundation to guide
public policy, tree planting initiatives,
restoration efforts and invasive
species removals for years to come,"
Mueller said.
"
Get to know your clients on a personal level.
I like to talk with them, ask about the house and
their trees, find out as much information as I can
about them. There have been times when I was
showing a crew the job and I can give them
personal information about the homeowners and
the trees, their entire life story almost, when the
trees were planted and such. I introduce the client
to the crew, and it just makes it more personal."
