Davey created an implementation team that spent much of 2019 examining the S/4 capabilities to identify benefits and improvements to optimize the company's transition to the new software. Among the significant improvements available are the ability to access and work with the software from anywhere on any type of device. And because of the easy-to-use screens, usage of the system can be expanded to many more employees. Before, only select employeesin qualified, necessary roles could access the system, and they could only access it from a desktop or laptop computer. "Currently, much of our business-to-business (B2B) operations is handled through Microsoft ® Excel, Google ® sheets, Microsoft Word documents, phone calls and emails," Countryman said. "This is starting to hinder our ability to grow because that approach is not scalable. So, we really dug into the B2B aspects of the S/4 software around project systems and will be using that to help run our B2B operations, which are mostly project-based." Additional improved features S/4 provides include: • Updated user-interface (UI) with real-time analytics • Improved billing support for subscription-based services • Updated electronic hourly time entry We have exciting news on the technology front as we begin the implementation of several new technologies in 2021 to improve employee support functions, enhance operational efficiency, improve driver safety, and make it easier for our clients to do business with us. The company is upgrading from the current SAP ® business software solutions to SAP S/4HANA to manage client billing, projects, fleet management and all other back-end business operations. As part of the SAP S/4 modernization, Davey is implementing SAP SuccessFactors, which is primarily a human experience management software that will expand access to employee records while improving functionality of the current system. The incorporation of the TRUCE ® app on company-issued mobile devices and in company vehicles will eliminate distracting notifications to improve driver safety. SAP S/4 MODERNIZATION In 1999, Davey launched its SAP platform to manage personnel, client, equipment, and cost data. Paychecks, invoices, purchase orders and other personal and financial information all transitioned from paper processes to the new software. "SAP will continue to run our business," said Tom Countryman, chief information officer. "SAP has been an absolute rock. It's been running our system for 20 years. Each program is rolling out in various phases with full implementation scheduled to be complete in the next few years. Timelines are as follows:
