March/April 2021
When a growing, 9-inch caliper red maple at the Porthouse
Theatre in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, needed to be transplanted,
the team at the Davey Nursery stepped in to help. Davey
retiree Dave Joy has volunteered at the theatre for years
and asked Davey to help with some of the landscape work.
"This is a gorgeous property, and when it came to the green
areas it's something that we want to look good for patrons
to enjoy, so we called in the best," he said.
Joy met with Rick Hanshaw, branch manager, Davey Nursery,
to assess the site, which included two parallel lines of red
maples and river birches – most of which are dedicated
memorial trees. One young maple was being edged out by

WINTER STORM PROMPTS EMERGENCY RESPONSE
When weather forecasters predicted
3 feet of snow could fall in New
Jersey from just one winter storm,
Davey utility clients in the Northeast
knew they had to plan ahead.
That's why, in early February, 290
Davey employees from Eastern Utility
services – including 76 from outside
the region – were on call for two days
in anticipation of countless snow-
toppled trees and severe outages.
The storm struck northeast
Pennsylvania and western New
Jersey first before barreling into
Massachusetts and Vermont. Along
the way, it dropped as much as 31
inches of snow in some parts of
New Jersey.
Matt Roddy, operations manager,
Utility services, Upper Atlantic region,
said fortunately the heavy snowfall
didn't yield heavy damage to the
infrastructure of Davey clients JCP&L
the birches, and the theatre recommended moving it and
another maple to frame a nearby pavilion. A third, smaller
maple was brought up from the Nursery. Hanshaw and
Dennis Claus, maintenance mechanic, used a massive
90-inch tree spade to safely relocate the two larger trees,
while Joy used his personal Kubota to maneuver the smaller
tree into place.
and National Grid, and many crews
returned home without having to
manage emergency storm work.
"There really was very little damage,"
Roddy said. "That was the interesting
thing about this storm. We had crews
travel in from four regions of Eastern
Utility services, including Wolf Tree.
The cooperation within our group
made it possible for that many crews
to respond so quickly from all across
the area."
