13 January/February 2021 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN ALL HEROES WEAR MASKS Ethan Jaques, foreman, and Dominic DiBlasio, trimmer, from Davey's Naples R/C office were featured in a campaign called "All Heroes Wear Masks" sponsored by the city of Naples and NCH Healthcare System. Photos of Jaques and DiBlasio wearing face masks were featured on gas station pumps, billboards, pamphlets, newspaper ads and even in a television commercial. "It's cool that we were able to represent Davey in the best of ways," Jaques said. "It also was great to do this campaign alongside the city's first responders and set the bar for the whole city." The corporate safety department hosted a new training class at Davey's East Campus to teach employees how to handle a powerline under tension due to trees falling and lodging on the lines, damage which is often encountered during storm events. Eight Eastern Utility services employees attended the class, focused on hazards involving stored energy or situations when the wires might snap back after tension is released. The goal for this training was to reduce injuries specific to this type of event, said Tim Walsh, director, corporate safety. Participants split into groups received seven hands-on scenarios with trees on wires, each with various tree sizes and rope angles. Students created a job plan and briefing, shared their plan and removed the trees from the wires. "We wanted them to understand the true nature of the risk," Walsh said. "The risks are high and different based on how the tree falls and other factors. We wanted to give them some tools and techniques to reduce the risks and manage the forces." The program received considerable cross-service line collaboration support from R/C, CLS, Utility and Fleet services. INAUGURAL TREES ON LINES TRAINING SAFETY DiBlasio said the whole campaign was a fun experience. "I feel honored and proud to have been a part of it," DiBlasio said. "It was exciting to see myself on the billboard for something good. One of those moments in your life you'll always remember." INTEGRITY Safety team members who helped prepare for this inaugural training included Jeremy Lewis, Brian Paris, Roy Montan, pictured, and Michael McCann, all of whom prepped the site at the Davey East Campus. Commercial Landscape Services Cleveland East territory mowed the training site. Eastern Utility services provided a bucket truck and chipper. The Akron R/C office loaned a crane to the effort. And the Kent Shop provided additional equipment. The Naples R/C office holds the trimming contracts for the city of Naples. The mayor of Naples nominated Davey to be part of the city's mask campaign. Rich Wiland, district manager, selected Ethan Jaques and Dominic DiBlasio (pictured) to represent Davey because they have been working on the trimming project the longest. "It's nice that we were nominated and great to see pictures of our Davey guys around the city," Wiland said. "It's special that they thought of us."
