THE SCHOOL OF CLIENT EXPERIENCE
In September, just as the students at Rainbow Montessori
Schools in Bloomfield, New Jersey, were coming back to
class, Alex Mullen, supervisor, PSE&G account, and his
crew started removing a 90-foot oak tree on the property.
While the utility client needed the hazard tree removed,
the school worked with Mullen months in advance to plan
the process so as to not disrupt classes. Working only on
Saturday mornings for several weeks, the crews arranged
two bucket trucks strategically around playground
equipment, lowering each piece to the ground slowly.
"When we were done each day, we made sure to clean
up everything so the kids wouldn't even know we were
there," Mullen said. "This project took a lot of
communication, even on the weekends, to assure the
school that we'd be safe. I make it a point to treat clients
with the same respect I would treat my boss or my family.
When they call, I answer."
Foremen Dony Gomez, Elfido Gomez, Robinson Grullon,
Wilfredo Martinez and Kevin Martinez, along with trimmer
Carlos Yanes, ensured the removal job was performed safely
and efficiently.
MISSION
Davey's Suffolk Commercial
Landscape Services (CLS) territory
assisted their client Elizabeth River
Crossings by helping them dislodge
a tractor trailer from a toll road
tunnel that connects Norfolk to
Portsmouth, Virginia.
There are large marine ports in the
area and often tractor trailer drivers
heading to or leaving the ports end
up on roadways that cannot support
large loads, said Jason Fawcett,
operations manager. In this instance,
the tractor trailer was carrying a
222,000-pound piece of machinery
and got stuck in the tunnel.
"It really wasn't the machinery that
was too tall, it was the wooden box
it was in," Fawcett said. "To eliminate
more damage to the tunnel, we came
in with chainsaws and chop saws and
CLEARING THE WAY TO REOPEN
cut the top 4
feet off the box.
The driver was
then able to back
out of the tunnel."
Fawcett said this
would not have
been accomplished
in a timely manner
without Chris
Dempsey, branch
manager, Brandon
Deen, landscape
crew leader, and
Mike Sigler, landscape crew leader.
"To do it safely and effectively to
where there was no more damage
caused and no one got hurt is 100
percent a testament to what our staff
and our teams do in the field for Davey
day in and day out," Fawcett said.
The Suffolk CLS territory's relationship
with the client began with a snow removal
contract for 64 lane miles of low-speed
roadway. Their contract expanded to include
roadway debris management.
