TREE LOGS MAKE LEARNING FUN
Early childhood and primary school students at the Old Trail
School in Peninsula, Ohio, got a playground upgrade over
the summer thanks in part to Davey's Akron R/C office. A
longtime client, the school hired multiple contractors to
design and build a nature-based playscape, with Davey
providing more than 20 tree logs. Jacob LeBarre, assistant
district manager, said he handpicked the wood (mostly hard
woods like oak), which were trucked to the school and cut into
smaller pieces or lifted into place with a Davey crane truck.
Johnny Ahn, Julie Cunningham, Joe Hashman and Dusko Maric put
in a full day's work using a crane, skid loader and chainsaws to construct
the innovative outdoor space for students to explore, play and learn.
In 2017, Davey set two corporate
responsibility goals: reduce fuel and
water consumption companywide by
35 percent per labor hour by 2023.
Both goals are well on their way to
being achieved.
From 2017 to 2019, global fleet fuel
consumption dropped 12 percent.
Replacement of sales fleet vehicles
with hybrids has contributed to this.
Upon a full overhaul of the fleet to
hybrid models, an additional 110,000
gallons of fuel will be saved annually.
At the field level, Davey is also
investing in more sustainable
battery-operated technologies, like
lithium ion-powered mowers and
handheld trimmers used in select

(CLS) territories.
In the same time period, field water
use dropped 24 percent, with the
goal of reducing usage further to 35
percent per labor hour by 2023. As
an essential element for plant health
care, Davey's commitment to water
stewardship is critical for the
continued success of the business.
"Our fuel and water goals are designed
to drive innovation while lowering
our environmental impact without
impacting production," said Mike
Veney, manager, environmental
programs, the Davey Institute. "When
we set these goals, we were not sure

how to meet
them. Through
the hard work and

and support departments these goals
are now very achievable."
"These incredible new spaces foster imagination, give
students the opportunity to connect with the natural world,
develop important social and cognitive skills, and simply
have fun," said Joe Vogel, associate head of school at
Old Trail School.
