6 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2020 4 1: TREESTUFF CLIMBING COMPETITORS Two teams from Davey competed in the Rescue Rally presented by TreeStuff and KASK. The virtual climbing competition consisted of several aerial rescue challenges judged by a panel of safety experts in the arboriculture industry and online community. Teams recorded videos of themselves completing a given climbing scenario, rescuing a dummy and ensuring safe climbing practices throughout. Team "Davey Trainers" consisted of Tim Bushnell, arborist skills specialist, and Corey Shepard and Emmett Shutts, arborist skills trainers. They won the first aerial rescue scenario, took second place in the second challenge and took first in the third and final event to win the entire competition. Davey's second team, "Davey Seattle," did well in the competition, also. The team of climbers from the Seattle R/C office included Duane Cook, trimmer; Wade Geissel, foreman; Clayton Lempp, foreman; and Russell O'Connell, trimmer. Tim Walsh, director, corporate safety, was on the panel of judges. Each of the CECs submitted a photo of themselves holding up an inspirational word, such as "Resilience," "Praying, " "Perseverance," "Family" and even "Chocolate" written on a card. "Our goal was to bring everyone closer, remind all of the CECs they are not alone, and to help raise the spirit of and bring hope to our team throughout the pandemic," said Patti Shanley, administrative manager, R/C services. Shanley helped put together the video with Heidi Park, online education coordinator, the Davey Institute. In August, Joe Gregory, regional operations manager, Davey Resource Group (DRG), presented to a virtual gathering of Northeast Ohio Rotary clubs during a lunch and learn event. Gregory was invited to speak about the state of community and urban forestry in the greater Akron, Ohio, region at the event after the Rotary group heard about DRG's work studying canopy cover decline and developing tree plans for the cities of Cleveland and Akron. "As a leader in both business and environmental stewardship, Davey is in a great position to help Rotary members identify environmental issues that matter to the community," Gregory said. "Canopy cover and tree benefits are on the decline in urban areas across the country, including Northeast Ohio cities. But there are clear strategies we can take to reverse that trend." 6: SAF NATIONAL SPEAKER In late October, Greg Ina, executive vice president, the Davey Institute and employee development, participated in the Society of American Forester's virtual 2020 national convention. Ina was a member of the convention's closing panel, titled "Today's Challenges, Tomorrow's Leaders." The panel featured six leaders from the public and private sectors covering topics ranging from how to prepare new leaders for 21st Century challenges to practical strategies for enhancing leadership and communications skills. 4: VIRTUAL CTSP In late August, September and October, approximately 60 Davey employees attended three virtual courses for the Tree Care Industry Association's (TCIA) Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) certification. The safety credential program teaches professional safety strategies and tactics that participants can then coach others on their teams. This year's virtual trainings featured two, 2-hour and one 3-hour segments throughout a single day, including a proctored exam. All three sessions reached maximum registration and were exclusive to Davey employees. "There were a lot of positives with the virtual program, above and beyond reducing the risk of the spread of COVID-19, with reduced cost being one of the biggest. The lower overall cost meant that more people were able to participate," said Tim Walsh, director, corporate safety. "The biggest challenge really was that this is normally an in-person event with a lot of interaction and social time." Davey participants included representatives from almost all of the service lines as well as support groups, including the safety and recruiting departments. 5: TOUR DES TREES '321' The annual Tour des Trees, which serves as the primary community engagement event for the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund), was a bit different this year. The event typically features a week-long cycling adventure that aligns with the International Society of Arboriculture's annual conference. But this year, "riders" were tasked to complete running, biking or walking miles – or doing jumping-jacks, or whatever motion they chose – a total of 321 times throughout a one-month period. This year, Davey was represented by 7 "riders," each of whom participated in the "321 Challenge." • Ryan Gustafson, project developer, DRG environmental consulting • Don Roppolo, manager, arboriculture training • Cindy Schwab, regional recruiting manager • Laurie Skul, senior financial analyst, treasury department • Billy Volchko, foreman, Naperville R/C office • Tim Walsh, director, corporate safety (a first time tour rider) • Tom Wolf, vice president of sales and client relations, DRG utility vegetation management Davey has been a financial supporter of the TREE Fund since its inception, and you can earmark a donation to the Davey Fund.
