7 September/October 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN 10 9: CONTACT TRACING TRAINING To ensure Davey's U.S. operations are up to date on the latest methodology, Anna Davis, director, Human Resource Administration, participated in an online contact tracing course conducted by Johns Hopkins University Department of Epidemiology. The course, led by scientist Dr. Emily Gurley, included a brief history of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 methods of transmission, techniques for tracing an individual's physical contacts in order to prevent further transmission and strategies to overcome barriers to contact tracing efforts. "Practical experience proved invaluable in this course. It served as a reminder that Davey is putting forward its best efforts and guidance to keep our teams safe," Davis said. 7: SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE SWEATSHOP The corporate office donated more than 200 pieces of discontinued Davey-branded clothing and apparel to the Kent Socially Responsible Sweatshop, an organization consisting of community members who sew clothing items and sell them, with proceeds going to charitable causes. With the donation, the sweatshop will be repurposing the clothing to make neck gaiters for use during the COVID-19 pandemic. 8: GIRL SCOUT COOKIE DONATIONS Everyone knows that time of year when the Girl Scouts set up their booths and start gathering orders from workplaces. Due to the pandemic, the 16 scouts of Troop 91122 in Kent, Ohio, had to find a non-traditional way of selling their delicious inventory. They set up a virtual cookie booth on social media and Davey helped out, donating enough money to allow the scouts to then donate more than 70 boxes – of roughly 400 boxes total – to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center. Davey received a 'Thank You' note from the troop. In this photo, Mallory Williams, daughter of Donald Williams, administrator, Kent Warehouse, is seen second from left. Fellow Girl Scouts Alyssa Poole, Sonya Winterich and Amelia Montgomery also helped to deliver cookies to UH Portage. 11 9 7 11: WATER STREET WINDOWS Employees of corporate communications in Kent, Ohio, twice decorated office windows to boost morale and show community support. The campaign continued around the city, with other businesses creating window murals to encourage people to support local businesses. The decorating team included: Sage Culley, project manager, corporate communications; Ariana Zingales, intern; Jennifer Lennox, director, public relations; and Blanche Burns, mother of Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning administration. 10: NECK GAITERS FOR HEALTHIER LIVING Davey donated 2,000 Davey neck gaiters to the Ronald McDonald House locations in Cleveland and Akron for those visiting patients. Davey also donated more than 2,000 Davey buffs to the city of Kent Health Department, which distributed them to businesses for workers who needed them and any community members who didn't have a mask. The donations were made in an effort to show support for those most in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. 8
