18 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2020 INTEGRITY Bobby Caulder, contract utility forester, Davey Resource Group, spends his free time as a blue-armored interstellar bounty hunter. Well, in costume, anyway. Caulder, a fan of all things Star Wars, is a member of the 501st Legion, a worldwide volunteer organization of costume enthusiasts who promote not only an interest in Star Wars, but also participate in and fundraise for charity events. In 2019, Caulder and his daughter, Maddy, 15, participated in roughly 25 events, from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and trunk-or-treat events to movie premieres and basketball games, all in the name of bringing joy to children facing grave diagnoses. They also spent time working with Waiting to Hear, a local nonprofit focused on addressing children's hearing disabilities. "To see those kids' faces light up, to be able to take their mind off what's really going on, is the best feeling. It makes you thankful for what you've got," Caulder said. "And as a father, seeing my daughter take her helmet off and have that same reaction to a kids' smile, seeing her get it – that's what makes it worth it." Alex Brown, work planner, Davey Resource Group, performed CPR on a drowning victim at Lions Park Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan. Brown and his family went to the beach to swim in Lake Michigan. But when they arrived, Brown saw that it was a dangerous day to be in the water due to the high winds, big waves and visible currents running parallel to the shore. On their way back to the car, Brown thought he heard someone calling for help. He told his wife to take their children to the car just in case someone was drowning. As he walked down to the beach, he saw two people pulling an unconscious Alex Brown's advice to everyone is not to take unnecessary risks while at home or at work. He said it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. He's grateful for Davey's CPR refresher course and recommends that if you have the opportunity to learn CPR to take advantage of it. ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO HELP SPREADING JOY THROUGH STAR WARS "It's just so neat when a kid comes up and asks for a picture with you. Of course, it's not about you. It's about the character. But it's their smile and their happiness. That's what it's all about," Bobby Caulder said, shown here in handmade armor with daughter Maddy, 15. young woman out of the water. Someone asked if anyone knew CPR and Brown offered to help. He began giving her chest compressions and performed all the necessary CPR steps for a water rescue. He performed several rounds of CPR before EMTs arrived. The young woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition and sadly passed away a few days later. "I like to think that at least me giving her CPR gave her a chance to make it to the hospital and fight for her life," Brown said. "I'm very grateful for the CPR refresher course I got last year from Davey. It helped give me the confidence to give that woman aid."
