For a dozen arborists from five offices in Colorado, spending
two nights in a riverside cabin at the base of the Rocky
Mountains became a jobsite reality. The small crew
completed a precision tree felling safety module near Red
Feather Lakes, focusing on chainsaw safety, practical cutting
skills like the 6-step precision felling method, notching
techniques and vegetation management practices. With
50-60 trees marked, most infested with mistletoe, it was
also an opportunity to test how different species reacted
to different cutting methods.
"This is a great 'get your hands dirty' approach to training
that kept the students more engaged and focused on the
techniques," said Jeremy Lewis, senior regional safety
specialist. "The module is also designed so they go back
and teach others at their offices best-practices."
The module was organized by Natalie McNeill, district manager,
Fort Collins office, and Jeremy Lewis, and involved arborists from
the North, South and West Denver, Fort Collins, and Boulder offices.
