31 March/April 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Jim Houston, vice president and general manager, Eastern Operations, U.S. R/C services, was appointed to the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) Board of Directors. He will serve a three-year term. The board establishes the strategic direction for TCIA, which includes developing policies and regulations for the operation and overall performance of the association. One of Houston's goals is to showcase the expertise of our industry and how it's set apart from other service-based industries. "This topic touches many facets, from greater awareness of the impact our greenspaces have on our communities, society and planet to the vast diversity of career opportunities," Houston said. "As an industry, we've come a long way, but we still have ways to go." Congrats Jim! Jacob McMains, area manager, DRG environmental consulting, received a 2019 Arbor Award of Excellence from The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Community Forestry Council (MCFC). The award recognizes significant and long-lasting efforts to care for trees in the recipient's community. "The respect I have for colleagues in the region, and the fact that the award was presented by former Missouri state forester Lisa Allen, who also happens to be my former employer, the award has significant meaning," McMains said. "As I reflect on a career that, to-date, includes 20 years of professional stewardship with the natural resources of the state of Missouri, I'd say it's one of my most cherished accolades." Congratulations Jacob! Dorothy Abeyta, project developer, Davey Resource Group, received the Award of Merit by the Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA). The award is presented to an SMA member who has greatly contributed to the advancement of SMA goals. Abeyta is a long-time member and current board member. "I am grateful for the opportunities to serve my community," Abeyta said. "These opportunities encouraged and motivated me to grow as a person, as a professional, and as a leader while selfishly doing what I love best. I am humbled by this award. It is a high point in my career." Congratulations Dorothy! Kara Mayle, senior project manager, corporate communications, was appointed to the board of directors for Saluting Branches: Arborists United for Veteran Remembrance. She is the team lead for the communications committee. Mayle also serves on the sponsorship committee. "It is an honor to serve those who have served. Being part of this group of individuals who all come together for one common goal is rewarding and refreshing," Mayle said. Congratulations, Kara! The Davey Resource Group (DRG) was part of a team of organizations that received a Best Practice Award from the American Planning Association, New York Upstate Chapter, for their work on the Historic Stockade District Comprehensive Streetscape Plan for Schenectady, New York. Other partners included the Stockade Association, city of Schenectady, Ingalls Planning & Design and Planning4Places, LLC. Planning4Places hired DRG to help with the urban tree streetscape plan. DRG focused on the hazard trees that needed to be removed, along with planting site areas with the "right tree, right place" mentality. "This award recognizes the hard work that lngalls Planning & Design, Davey Resource Group, and Planning4Places put into this plan," said Liz McKinley, associate consultant, DRG, and DRG team lead on this project. "I hope this award allows us to connect with more people and municipalities to help make positive changes within their urban forest." Congrats DRG! Lee Mueller, market manager, environmental consulting, Davey Resource Group, received a 2020 Professional Award from the Arboriculture Society of Michigan (ASM), Michigan Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) for his services and contributions to arboriculture and urban forestry profession.
