28 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2020 IN THE SPOTLIGHT Shawn Bruzda, senior environmental scientist, Davey Resource Group (DRG), was recently awarded the John Burroughs Nature Award by the Buckeye Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Bruzda is an assistant leader in BSA Troop 252 in Kent where his son Kenyon is a youth scout. Each year, the troop attends a week-long summer camp at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation in Kensington, Ohio, and in the summer of 2019, Shawn elected to participate in an extensive nature study program which required him to identify dozens of species and types of plants, wildlife, geology and astronomy, along with completing a nature project. At a Court of Honor in October 2019, Shawn was presented a bronze Sugar Maple leaf to add to his uniform in recognition of his accomplishment. "The boys call me Yeti, because I am a big guy that spends lots of time in the woods," Bruzda said. Congratulations Shawn! The American Heart Association recognized Sandra Reid, vice president of corporate communications and strategic planning administration, with a 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award for her continued support of the association. Reid serves as a board member for the heart association and is a dedicated volunteer. She was joined by Davey President and CEO Pat Covey at a luncheon to receive the award from AHA representatives Jenny Peshina and Colleen Repie. Congratulations Sandra! Ana Burns, senior area manager, Davey Resource Group (DRG), has been elected to a three-year term on the Summit County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) board of supervisors. The SWCD board is responsible for the fiscal management of the organization and plays a key role in ensuring the organization is working in harmony with its stated mission, vision and core values. Last year, Burns was part of a working group to update the strategic plan for the SWCD for the next 5 years. "I look forward to working with the other supervisors and the SWCD staff to implement the updated strategic plan," Burns said. Congratulations Ana! Craig Holcomb, vice president, operations support services, has been appointed to a Fleet Advisory Board sponsored by Davey's fuel program provider WEX Inc. The board is comprised of executive leaders of large fleets, like Coca-Cola, Verizon, Dycom, Enterprise Holdings and more. His term on the board will be two years. "I think it will be extremely beneficial to Davey and my team as we continue to progress and move our fleet services forward toward 2030," Holcomb said. Congratulations, Craig! Brigitte Orrick, director of recruiting and employee development, was appointed to the newly created National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Women in Landscape Network. The network is led by 20 landscape professionals, women and men, passionate about female representation and advancement in the landscape and lawn care industry, according to the NALP website. The goals of the Women in Landscape Network are to connect, empower and advocate for women in the landscape industry; recruit and retain female professionals and give a voice to women leaders. Congratulations Brigitte! Signal Tree.jpg Karen Wise, vice president, environmental consulting, Davey Resource Group (DRG), is a member of the 2019-2020 Leadership Portage County (LPC) class. Wise is one of several Davey employees that have participated in this program. This is a 9-month program to develop active and influential leaders, with the knowledge of the issues facing Portage County, Ohio. The class meets once a month and each of the classes have a specific theme targeting a specific challenge or opportunity within Portage County.
