THE DAVEY BULLETIN

January/February 2020
Paul Herb talked with students about the internship opportunities available at Davey during a
climbing class he coordinates. He stresses the importance of internships, so they can find out
if they are passionate about pursuing a career in the industry. Herb also tries to have graduates
of the Allegany forestry program present, so the students can talk to them about their careers.
INVESTING IN ALLEGANY'S FUTURE ARBORISTS
For many years, Davey's Residential/
Commercial (R/C) services
Mid-Atlantic Operating Group has
supported the Allegany College of
Maryland's forestry program by
teaching a 40-hour, two-weekend
practical tree climbing class.
LEADERSHIP
SUPPORTING A SUPPORTIVE CLIENT
The Indianapolis R/C office donated the removal of a
declining blue spruce from the courtyard at Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Central Indiana to make room for a new
statue in memory of children who have passed away.
Ronald McDonald House has been a Davey client for many
years and the office does routine pruning on the property
every two or three years, said Isaac Miller, sales arborist.
"This year when we were out pruning, they told us about
their interest in removing the spruce," Miller said. "I talked
with my manager about donating the work. I figured it
would be nice to give something back, as they've been a
great client."
The following Davey
employees assisted Paul
Herb with the class:
Chris Klimas, operations
manager, Mid-Atlantic
Operating Group; Dan
Malooly, sales arborist,
Washington, D.C., R/C
office; Lou Meyer,
assistant district manager,
Chesapeake R/C office;
Steve Nagy, assistant
district manager, Dulles
R/C office; Chris Rosier,
sales arborist, South
Baltimore R/C office;
and Matt Trainum, sales
and service technician,
Washington, D.C.,
R/C office
Pictured from left are Harold Hagerman, foreman, and
Isaac Miller. Not pictured is John Caulk, groundman. He also
assisted with the removal.
The class is composed of classroom
work and hands on application. The
students learn tree climbing basics,
receive an overview of industry safety
standards and eventually test out their
climbing skills, said Paul Herb, sales
arborist, North Baltimore R/C office.
Herb is the lead class instructor.
"It's important that Davey gets
our name out there," Herb said. "It
shows that we are willing to invest
our time in people and these students.
Davey has so much to offer these
students and a lot of schools don't
realize that, especially in the area of
urban forestry."
