THE DAVEY BULLETIN
SOUTH DAKOTA STUDENTS LEARN THE DAVEY WAY
Casey Snyder, sales arborist, North
Minneapolis R/C office, taught a
climbing class at Southeast Technical
Institute Horticulture Technology
Program in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Snyder's a graduate of the program.
He teaches the class to pique
interest in climbing, but also to help
students competing in the National
Association of Landscape Professionals
(NALP) National Collegiate
Landscape Competition.
"It's more about getting them in the
tree and giving them an opportunity to
practice using some of the equipment
they'll use professionally," he said.
Snyder encourages Davey alumni of
forestry or horticulture programs to
reach out to a program instructor or
advisor to offer professional guidance
for the students.
"It's not just for the fact these
students could come work for us, but
they could be future clients of ours,"
Snyder said. "Giving them our time
gives a good impression and shows
that we are available for students.
The students want more professional
face-to-face time in the classroom.
It's really important."
Above: This year the weather was on
Casey Snyder's side for the climbing class.
The students had the opportunity to climb a
smaller introductory green ash tree and test
out their throwball and climbing skills in
cottonwood trees. Southeast Technical
Institute Horticulture Technology is a smaller
school and they don't always get a lot of
attention. A goal of Snyder's is to help the
school build up a newer inventory of tree
climbing gear.

DAVEY CANADA EMPLOYEES
VOLUNTEER TO HELP LOCAL CAMP
Four employees from the Davey Tree
Expert Company of Canada, Limited's,
London and Strathroy R/C offices
participated in the Ontario Commercial
Arborist Association (OCAA) 8th annual
Day of Service in Southwestern Ontario.
OCAA holds Day of Service events
several times throughout the year in
different parts of Ontario. The 2019
Day of Service for Southwestern
Ontario was held at Camp Kee-Mo-Kee
in Komoka, Ontario, to assist with tree
removals on the property.
The goal of the OCAA Day of Service
is finding a local community that
requires assistance maintaining their
landscape. The properties chosen
are often not-for-profit organizations,
kids' camps, charities and low-income
housing developments.
"It is such a great opportunity for
Davey and Davey employees to give
back to the local community that they
live, play and work in," said John
Ransom, area manager, R/C services.
Lucas Turnbull, climber, Strathroy office;
Tom Janssen, foreman, Strathroy office;
Scotty Imrie, foreman, London office; and
Craig Kniffen, foreman, London office,
participated with other local tree care
companies in the OCAA Day of Service
at Camp Kee-Mo-Kee.
