Williams said the conference focused on making space for trees in the built environment. "It was about what's in the built environment, the potential conflicts and how trees can be accommodated," she said. DRG assists clients with tree preservation during construction. When it comes to the biomass of a tree, half of it exists below ground, mostly in the top 2 feet of soil. Construction, especially trenching for utilities, can significantly disrupt the root system and lead to a tree's decline. Directional underground boring can bypass the root zone and limit tree impacts. The borer creates a tunnel underground for the utility infrastructure without cutting through the root zone. These photos were taken during an assessment of two red oak trees at Markham School in Portland, Oregon. The school wanted to protect the trees during construction. Boring was used during the project to protect the roots. "It's an innovative technology to save some trees," Williams said. "It's a good option to offer clients when they want tree preservation."
